In a world of escalating tensions and hate crimes based on race, religion, ethnicity or cultural background, the need to educate youth about the dangers of marginalizing people based on these attributes is paramount.
The Rose and Sigmund Strochlitz Holocaust Resource Center uses the lessons of the Holocaust to help students combat group hatred of all kinds – racial, religious, ethnic, and political. The center has established strong partnerships with local school districts, children of Holocaust survivors and organizations such as the American Society for Yad Vashem to ensure and facilitate meaningful Holocaust education and access to supporting resource material.
Encountering Differences connects students with African Americans in the local area to experience a living history of their family’s experiences related to race. Discussions are focused on segregation, the Great Migration, the Civil Rights Movement, systemic racism, and current acute manifestations of racism.
A series of classroom or group discussions with our program hosts provide unique opportunities for learning, enabling a deeper level of understanding that only personal connections can provide. Through personal stories of resilience, students can truly understand the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Encountering Survivors
Encountering Survivors is a unique opportunity for students to learn about the Holocaust through the eyes of local survivors. Students learn detailed personal accounts of the survivors’ childhood, experiences during the Holocaust, and their liberation and immigration to the United States. Students also have the opportunity to discuss modern anti-Semitism and draw lessons from the history of anti-Semitism in Europe and America.
Encountering Survivors gives students the necessary tools to examine their own role in creating a just society, confront hatred and prejudice by breaking down racial and cultural barriers and impact change within their school and greater communities.
