92nd Street Y: Continuing Education – 2-part class
World War II and the Middle East with Gershom Gorenberg
In the summer of 1942, the Nazis stood on the verge of conquering Cairo and Jerusalem, and the SS prepared to murder the Jews of the Middle East. Espionage, kept secret for decades, turned the tables.
Over two sessions based on his riveting new book, War of Shadows, author Gershom Gorenberg will uncover the least-known chapters of World War II and Holocaust history. Participants will gain a strikingly new view of the war — and of how it shaped the birth of Israel and the modern Middle East.
February 9: The Forgotten Front: The Holocaust Beyond Europe
Gorenberg will discuss the significance of the Holocaust in the Middle East and North Africa.
February 16: The Forgotten Front: Secrets of Victory Against the Nazis in the Middle East
Relying on his recent findings and new scholarship, Gorenberg will guide participants through the long-secret evidence of the espionage affair that stopped the Axis at the gates of Egypt.
