Jewish Odessa Tour Part 4: Bazarnaya Street and the Jewish Intellectuals
Odessa’s fascinating Jewish heritage continues with a live-stream tour along Bazarnaya Street. Named after one of the two oldest markets or bazars, it can be considered the second “Jewish street.” In the late 1800’s, this tranquil street on the city center outskirts became the address for several Jewish intellectuals including Dubnow, Tchernichowsky, Dizengoff, and Jabotinsky. Strolling along this long street planted with old acacia trees, we’ll sneak a peek behind the facades of the heritage buildings and discuss how Odessa became a center for Jewish intellectual life during the Russian Empire. We’ll also explore modern Jewish life in Odessa.
Sights on this virtual tour include:
- Synagogue of Tailors
- Jewish boarding school (exterior only)
