Avi Avital, mandolin, and Brooklyn Rider play Boccherini, Golijov, and more
“The words ‘superstar’ and ‘mandolinist’ still look odd next to each other. Yet in the classical world they are starting to be joined with some frequency … Avi Avital … was nothing short of electric.”
– The New York Times
Israeli mandolin wizard Avi Avital has dazzled audiences around the world, toured with Yo-Yo Ma’s Silkroad, and earned a Grammy nomination for his virtuosity and joy-filled artistry. He teams up with the cutting-edge young string quartet Brooklyn Rider (two of its four members are also with The Knights) for a dynamic, culturally rich program that traverses late 18th century Spanish-inflected Boccherini, a powerful contemporary statement about the US-Mexico border crisis by Matan Roberts, selections by Bach, a world premiere by internationally-renowned Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov and more, concluding with a mesmerizing work by Silkroad favorite Lev “Lyova” Zhurbin — a fabulous, feverish gypsy tarantella.
