2021 Melrod Lecture: Connecticut College: “Jews, Slavery and the American Civil War” by Dr. Paul Finkelman
This lecture will explore the relationship of Jews to slavery. There will be a brief discussion of Jewish law and Jews and slavery in medieval Europe and then a longer discussion of American Jews and slavery from the colonial period to the American Civil War. It will also, briefly, take about Jews and slavery in other New World colonies and Jewish involvement in the African slave trade.
About Dr. Finkelman: Paul Finkelman, the president of Gratz College, is a specialist on American Constitutional and legal history, the American Civil War, religious liberty, and the history of religion in the U.S., American Jewish history, slavery, civil rights and race relations, African American history, and legal issues surrounding baseball.
